Pros and cons of Shaklee products

A pros and cons list from someone who sells the product is only useful if the cons are real. Mine are. Both columns below point at things you can check rather than at my enthusiasm.

The pros, with receipts

Independent testing exists and is public

ConsumerLab buys and tests supplements independently and covers Shaklee. The Environmental Working Group rates ingredients in its Skin Deep database and marks several Shaklee products EWG VERIFIED. You do not have to take quality on faith.

Registered with Health Canada

Products sold in Canada are registered to Shaklee Canada Inc. in Health Canada’s Drug Product Database, which is a government record rather than a marketing claim.

A seventy-year operating history

The company has manufactured products continuously since 1956. Longevity is not proof of quality, but it is a real signal in a category full of brands that appear and vanish inside two years.

A money-back guarantee that is actually used

Shaklee advertises a 100% money-back guarantee on its products. In my own experience as a distributor, refund requests are honoured without argument, and you are welcome to hold me to that.

The cons, without softening

You pay a premium over store brands

Shaklee costs more than comparable products on a drugstore shelf. Testing and sourcing explain some of the gap; the direct sales structure explains some of it too. If budget is the deciding factor, a store brand with a recognised quality mark is a rational choice.

It is sold through multi-level marketing

Shaklee is a direct sales company, and many people dislike that model for good reasons. I have answered the question plainly rather than dodging it on the is Shaklee an MLM page, including what the compensation disclosure actually says.

Some sellers overclaim

Supplement marketing in general attracts health claims that outrun the evidence, and distributor-led selling can make that worse. This site deliberately carries no health claims; if any seller promises you a cure, walk away, whatever the brand.

Ordering goes through a distributor or the brand store

You cannot pick Shaklee up at a pharmacy. Everything routes through the Shaklee storefront or a distributor like me, which adds a relationship some people value and others find to be friction.

How to weigh them

Price and model are the honest costs; testing and accountability are the honest benefits. If you want to go deeper than this page, thequality and testing page covers what the screening standard actually checks, and thereviews page separates the places you can read opinions by what each source is measuring. If after all that a store brand suits you better, buy the store brand. I mean that.

Questions people actually ask

Are Shaklee products worth the price?

It depends what you are paying for. If independent testing, Health Canada registration, and a money-back guarantee matter to you, the premium buys something real. If you want the cheapest adequate multivitamin, a store brand with a recognised quality mark is the better purchase and I would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

What is the biggest downside of Shaklee?

For most people it is the combination of price and the direct sales model. The products cost more than shelf brands, and buying them involves a distributor or the brand storefront rather than a pharmacy aisle. Whether the trade is worth it depends on how much you value the testing and the guarantee on the other side of the ledger.

Do Shaklee products have side effects?

Supplements are not risk-free as a category, and anything with active ingredients can interact with medication. Nothing on this site is health advice. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting any supplement, bring the actual label, and ignore any seller who tells you otherwise.

Is Shaklee better than other supplement brands?

Better is doing a lot of work in that question. What I can say checkably: Shaklee submits to independent testing, registers its Canadian products with Health Canada, and publishes an ingredient screening standard. Some other brands do the equivalent and many do not. Compare any two brands on those public records rather than on either brand’s advertising, mine included.
